Since I started school I have made 3 great friend: Raul, Daniel, and Brian. At one point or another we have all worked with each other in class. Raul is pretty boisterous and through discussion we discovered that we went to high school together. Daniel is young, shy, and fairly quiet. He is a really nice guy that has been making some very smart decisions early in life. Brian is a handful to say the least. He is loud, vulgar, and has become the resident asshole.
Raul and Daniel in the background
Our first set of classes was College Success and Foundations 1. Foundations 1 was where we first started learning how to use the monstrous knife kit they gave us. For the most part there were no serious injuries. With that being said there was one day where I sliced my thumb up really good.
Our next class was Foundations 2. This was our first cooking class. We were able to select our teams and of course I picked Daniel and Raul. The class went really well. There were a few dishes that we made in that class that I was excited to make, risotto being one of them.
Now after a set of cooking classes there is always a set of academic classes because I am in the associates degree program. After Foundations 2 we moved into our first full set of academic classes, Communications and Culinary Math. Communications was pretty standard but Math was definitely an experience. Our math teacher flirted constantly with the line in between crazy and pure genius. The guy was beyond smart since he holds several degrees in nuclear physics. He also always had something to say about something. He was fun though and had the ability to make the math easy and fun.
Our next block of class was Foundations 3. This was another cooking class and the last of our foundations classes. In Foundations 3 we learned about plating and meat fabrication. Our first day of class we watched a movie that showed the entire process of fabricating a cow. It was.... interesting. Through out the class we learned how to fabricate different cuts of meat including a whole rack of lamb. We also made A LOT of chicken. On the second to last week of class we had the opportunity to serve students outside of our class and put on a seafood buffet.
We are currently in our next block of academic classes, Cost Control and College English. Classes are over half over and I am really ready to get back into the kitchen. Cost control has been a great class so far and I am very anxious for my certification test in 2 weeks. College English on the other hand has been a complete bear to get through. The teacher has never taught at a culinary school before and we are her first class. Hopefully she will figure out soon that she really needs to make the assignments relate-able.
Well I think that is everything so far. I won't update every day but I will try to update on a regular basis.
